The Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), formally called Human gammaherpesvirus 4, is one of the nine known human herpesvirus types in the herpes family, and is one of the most common viruses in humans. EBV is a double-stranded DNA virus.

Symptoms:

  • Enlarged spleen
  • Swollen liver
  • White patches on tonsils

Palliative care:

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink lots of water
  • Gargle with salt water
  • Take painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen to bring down fever and relieve body aches.
  • Avoid heavy lifting to prevent spleen injury.

Other diseases caused by EBV: - Ear infections - Guillain-Barre syndrome - Cancers, like Burkitt's lymphoma and cancers of the nose and throat
